Thaddeus Horatius Caraway (October 17, 1871 – November 6, 1931) was an American politician who represented the state of Arkansas first in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1913 to 1921 and then in the U.S. Senate from 1921 until his death in 1931.
Paul Wyatt Caraway (December 23, 1905 – December 13, 1985) was an American military officer who was the 3rd High Commissioner of the United States Civil Administration of the Ryukyu Islands. He held the rank of lieutenant general in the United States Army. He was the son of two influential Arkansas Senators, Hattie Caraway and Thaddeus Caraway.
Incumbent U.S. Senator Thaddeus Caraway died in office on November 6, 1931. Governor of Arkansas Harvey Parnell appointed Caraway's widow, Hattie, to fill the vacant seat until a successor could be duly elected. The special election to complete the unexpired term was held in January, and Hattie Caraway won against only nominal opposition.

She was the first woman elected to the Senate, the first woman to serve a full term as a United States senator, and the first woman to be reelected to the Senate.
